Hutterite brothers and separatists

In 1731 Count Zinzendorf (see p. 162) took part in the coronation of Christian VI in Copenhagen. Christian had found him sympathetic during a journey through Germany a few years previously, and in his court the charming and pious count was admired and fêted by many. However, other prominent people were sceptical of his teachings and personal behaviour. For his part, Count Zinzendorf had come to Denmark with great ambitions: he had given some thought to taking over the missions to Greenland and northern Norway, he wanted to establish a Danish university for the King in Flensburg, which would ‘fill the whole world with the gospel of Christ’ and he also suggested that the King appoint him to the post of prefect. But none of this came to anything; the King was satisfied to award the count an order, but the edificatory meetings which Zinzendorf and his assistants held every evening in Copenhagen were nevertheless quite influential.
